Our History

In 1948, John J. Harmon purchased the Walter B. Cooke Funeral Home, which was subsequently renamed the Harmon Funeral Home. Since that time, Harmon Funeral Home has served the community of Staten Island with care, compassion and dignity. In 1952, Mr. Harmon expanded the business by constructing an addition to the funeral home. And, again in 1977, Mr. Harmon added an extension to the building. Today Harmon Funeral Home is Staten Island’s largest family owned and operated funeral home.

The McGinley Family has helped members of the community in their time of need for over 100 years. In 1898 Thomas R. McGinley founded McGinley Funeral Home, which was located in Stapleton. Later his sons Roger and Kenneth T. joined the family business and remained until 1971 when the funeral home closed its doors.

Kenneth T. McGinley began working at Harmon Funeral Home in 1952 and in 1976 became manager. After Mr. Harmon’s death in 1995, Kenneth T. and his son, K. Terrance purchased the funeral home from Charlotte Harmon, John Harmon’s widow. In 1997 Kenneth T. retired from the business.

In 1999 K.Terrance McGinley expanded the business with the acquisition of Johnson Funeral Home, a 40 year old funeral home in Wall, New Jersey. In 2001 Terrance P. , K. Terrance's son, joined him at Harmon Funeral Home.

Harmon's and Johnson-McGinley Funeral Homes are both members of The International Order of the Golden Rule, which is a prestigious organization for quality family owned and operated funeral homes.
